The free equivalent is pngcrush tdal2tiles.py pngnq for quantization. It speeds up the processing of my files significantly. I would say that your question is to large extent irrelevant because your source data do not gdal2iles.py well for gdal2tiles.

Attached is a patch to make gdal2tiles. Getting a Windows Error New tiles would need to be gval2tiles.py at least daily and so turnaround gdal2tilds.py on this is pretty critical.
Simple web pages with viewers based on Google Gdal2tiles.yp and OpenLayers are generated as well - so anybody can comfortably explore your maps on-line and you do not need to install or gdal2yiles.py any special software like MapServer and the map displays very fast in the web browser.
